Junk Food Junkies
Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in
Florida gave a group of lab rats unlimited access to
junk food. The rodents gained weight and became
so hooked on the junk food that they wouldn't stop
eating it even when shocked. Lab rats that were fed
healthy diets with limited access to junk food didn't eat
the high-calorie food compulsively, and would stop
eating when shocked. When the junk food rodents
were switched to a healthy diet, they refused to eat
at all for two weeks. The researchers noted the junk
food harmed dopamine receptors in the rats' brains.
The same receptors that are damaged by cocaine use.
