New Year is the time at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar’s year count is incremented.  Symbolically it’s a chance for people to turn a page on the old and start fresh with new chances and opportunities.  Most cultures celebrate this event in some manner, although not necessarily at the same time.  For instance, worldwide the New Year is celebrated on January 1^st, following the Gregorian calendar; however there are numerous calendars that remain in use regionally that follow the lunar and equinox cycles.  The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, falls every year on the new moon of the first lunar month.  This means that the New Year can fall at any time between January 21^st and February 21^st.  And Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew for ‘head of the year’) a Jewish holiday commemorating the culmination of the seven days of Creation, and marking God’s yearly renewal of His world, is celebrated in Autumn.

No matter what cultural tradition you follow, New Year celebrations honor the cycles and passage of time, endings, and new beginnings.  Our Holiday Celebrations New Year 2012 set is designed to celebrate the keepers of time past and present, highlighting calendars, and clocks.  Cards P4-P6 have been given special significance to honor the 2012 Chinese New Year of the Dragon, and the sets’ puzzle back image honors the 2012 end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar.
